2008-2009 3A STARS!!!

What a great school year with a SUPER bunch of kids!!!

Dental Health Poster Winner

During the month of February while we were studying our "Staying Healthy" unit for Science, I decided to incorporate a couple days of Dental Health, as the entire state of Iowa was focusing on it as well. As part of their study, they wanted 3rd grade teachers to incorporate some lessons into their classroom as well as have their students participate in a poster contest. The theme for this year was "Turn up your Smile Power." Each student got to choose how they wanted to create their poster as long as they incorporated the theme. Three 3A students' posters were chosen (in a vote by the class) to send on to the district level. We were lucky enough to have one of our students, Elle Feucht, be a district winner!!! As a district winner, she received a $100 Savings Bond! We are so proud of her for this great accomplishment!

Winners of Metric Olympics

Here are the winners from each of the 5 Metric Olympic Events!

* I will have to wait until I can get into my new room (floors being waxed) before I can post the events and the scores! I don't remember who exactly won each event - May was a long time ago!

Metric Olympics

On the last Wednesday of the school year, we held a Metric Olympics. Each student participated in 5 events: Cotton ball Shotput, Paper plate discus, Paper straw javelin, Right-handed Marble Grab, and Left-handed Sponge Squeeze. The object of each was for each student to ESTIMATE what their results would be, measure the actual result, and then find the difference between the two. The person who had the smallest difference was the winner for each event. We were lucky enough to have the 7th grade math classes help us with all of our events. They helped our students with the events by aiding with the measuring as well as with the actual math. They made it run so smoothly! Thanks so much to them and to their teacher, Mr. Childress (my brother), for helping us out! We are definitely going to do something similar in 4th grade!!!!

Have a Great Summer!

I first want to apologize for not getting any of those new pictures up (from Metric Olympics and End-of-the-Year). The stomach flu was going around my family, and of course, I got it on Wednesday and wasn't able to make it out to MY last day of school (and my work day) on the 20th! My son Ryan then was sick on Thursday, and by the time I went out to school on Friday (22nd), the janitors (who are AWESOME, by the way!) had already moved EVERYTHING out of the room (including the computer which had all of my pictures on it) in order to clean it and wax the floors! I WILL get them up when I go back in August to start the new school year, and I will try to get "reminders" out to all of my 3A students so you all can go and check them out then!

Second, I want to tell you how much I enjoyed my 3A students this year! What a GREAT class of kids! I look forward to seeing all of them next year in 4th grade (some in my class and the rest for Writing & Grammar)! I hope you all have a FANTASTIC summer! Please encourage your kids to read as well as practice those multiplication & division facts! It will make such a difference for next year!!!!

Western Week - Reading Activities

The kids had a great time with our Western Week Reading Activities. Thanks to you all for encouraging them to dress-up each day. This afternoon we went to an assembly put on by the Swanson family from Canton. During the assembly we learned some history about cowboys as well as became familiar with Cowboy gear (clothes they wore). We also saw them do some pretty cool stuff with their ropes and whips, as well as play us some “cowboy music” with a fiddle, mandolin and guitar.

Hannah - Wildcat of the Week

Hannah's mom, Nikki Van Engen, came to visit the class on Tuesday, April 28th, while Hannah was Wildcat of the Week. Nikki works at Mickel's Corner in Inwood. She mentioned to the class and Mrs. Sorensen that the favorite part of her job was visiting with the many people who come into the store during the day. She also brought in two of Hannah's pets to share with the class, a puppy and a tiny turtle that they found. Thanks to Nikki for taking the time to come and visit with us!
