Megan Blauwet wins the 2011 IditREAD!

During the month of March, students were encouraged to try and get 26 RC points in order to finish the IditaREAD in our classroom! The number 26 came from the number of checkpoints that there are in the Iditarod dogsled race that takes place every year in Alaska. In addition to our IditaREAD, we also did other activities that focused on the Iditarod. Students learned about the Balto story (history of the Iditarod), summarized and made posters about an Iditarod book, followed a musher during the race, and made dioramas of a scene from the Iditarod.

Megan was the first student to reach 26 RC points, and therefore, was the winner of the IditaREAD! She finished the "race" in just 3 days!!!

Measurement Olympics

On Thursday, March 17th, our class ventured down to the JH hallway and Mr. Childress' (the awesome JH Math teacher and my brother) room to participate in Measurement Olympics. The students competed in 5 events: Cotton Ball Shotput, Straw Javelin, Standing Broad Jump, Right-handed Marble Grab, and Left-handed Sponge Squeeze. Before actually doing the event, students had to ESTIMATE the measurement they thought they would get. The score they ended up with was the difference between their ESTIMATED measurement and their ACTUAL measurement (in other words, students closest to zero had the best scores!) It was a lot of fun and great way to culminate our chapter on Measurement. A big thank you to Mr. Childress and the JH math students who helped us out with this event!
