Dr. Johnson Visits
As part of our "Staying Healthy" unit, we had Dr. Michelle Johnson (Mr. Johnson's wife) come and talk to the third grades on some hints to staying healthy on Thursday, February 19th. She played a "Jeopardy" game with the kids with categories that focued on caffeine, snacking, exercise, etc. The kids had a lot of fun "learning" during the game. They also really enjoyed the LOW-FAT icecream sandwiches she brought for a treat (you'll have to ask them if they could tell the difference!) Thanks to Dr. Johnson for taking the time out of her busy schedule to come talk to us!
Mia as Wildcat of the Week
Mia's mom, Missy, visited the class back in January while Mia was the Wildcat of the Week. I happened to get a picture of the two of them together at the Valentine's party (she visited in the morning while Mrs. Sorensen was working, so I didn't get a picture then). Missy shared with me that she works as a Nurse Practitioner at McHale Institute which specializes in cancer and blood/clotting disorders. She sees and treats patients on a daily basis and play a supportive role in that she tries to alleviate side effects or other problems patients and their families may experience during (or even after) they go through cancer treatment. We would like to thank her for taking the time to come and visit with our class!

Valentine's Day Party
On Thursday, February 12th, we celebrated Valentine's Day by having a party. The kids had a great time playing games, eating snacks and opening up valentines from their friends and classmates! A big thank you to the parents who helped with the Valentine's Day party: Kathy Knoblock, Stacie Feucht, Cindy Miller, Scott Reinke, Missy Hoogeveen and Samantha Besonen! The pictures are mostly of the kids playing the games. In the first game, they had a name of a type of candy taped to their back and they had to go around asking questions to try and guess what candy they were. The 2nd game consisted of them competing in a relay where they had to wear big work gloves and try to open the wrapper on a piece of gum. The 3rd game was a Valentine's version of "Heads Up, 7 up" - only instead of putting their thumbs up, they held up a Valentine's pencil.

Devon - Wildcat of the Week
Devon's mom Cindy came in to visit with the class on Thursday, February 12, while Devon was the Wildcat of the Week. Cindy and her husband both work at Sioux Nation Ag Center in Sioux Falls. Sioux Nation is an agricultural business that provides livestock producers with many different products and supplies, such as vaccines and medicines, feed and vet services. Cindy works in the office, so she is responsible for many of the duties that keep the business up and running, such as paying bills, paying employees, etc. We would like to thank her for taking the time to come in and visit with us.

Valentine Fractions
On Tuesday, February 3rd, we had a special Valentine Fractions lesson. Since we don't get to the Fractions chapter in our Math book before ITBS, I just like to do a short lesson to introduce the kids to fractions and give them some general information. We talked about fractions and what the different parts are called (numerator and denominator). The kids got some practice drawing and naming different fractions, and then we completed a Valentine Cookie Fraction worksheet. After that, they got a page where they had to decorate a certain fraction of hearts (they look great up on our February bulletin board by the way!) Last but not least, the kids got to decorate and eat their own Valentine Heart Cookie! I always try to tell them that Math can be fun!!! Here are some fractions we came up with about our class:
4/19 of the students live in Alvord
3/19 of the students live in Inwood
7/19 of the students live in Larchwood
5/19 of the students live in Lester
10/19 of the students are boys
9/19 of the students are girls
3/19 of the students wear glasses
9/19 of the students wore blue jeans
Kiana - Wildcat of the Week
On Friday, January 30th, Kiana's dad Travis came to talk to us while Kiana was the Wildcat of the Week. Travis is a crop farmer and raises pigs near Lester and Alvord. He talked to us about his job (farrowing, weaning, sending the pigs to market) and answered a lot of interesting questions! We appreciate him taking time to come visit with us!
